Dear Walnut Twp. Local Schools Parents,

During the levy campaigns of May 2014 and November 2014 it was clearly stated the Walnut Twp. Local School District would be in fiscal deficit as of January 2015 if the levy did not pass.  Our voting residents have spoken, and did not pass the levy.  Due to that vote, the District is facing a fiscal deficit beginning January 2015.

By law school districts are not allowed to operate in a deficit.   Therefore, the Walnut Township School District must immediately put a plan in place to overcome the deficit (approximately $100,000) by June 30, 2015.

One of the first cost cutting measures the board voted to implement is cutting back to one bus route.  To accommodate our students on one bus route means we will not be transporting high school students (grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - ORC 3327.01).  Only KG through 8th graders will be allowed to ride our buses.  This change in bus routes also means start/end times will change for both the elementary and JH/HS buildings (see attached schedules).  The number of bus stops will also be reduced.  Student’s pick up and drop off times will change.  Your KG-8th grade student may also end up riding a different bus.  Bus drivers will contact you with specific pickup/drop off times and locations.

CHANGES IN TRANSPORTATION and START/END TIMES WILL BEGIN MONDAY, JANUARY 5, 2015.

The Board will be holding a special board meeting/work session on Wednesday, December 17 @ 5:00 p.m. in the elementary library to discuss further cost saving measures for the remainder of this school year.

Yours in education,

Randall J. Cotner, Superintendent
